Brindabella Birds ‘n’ Bees Pty. Ltd.

Brindabella Birds ‘n’ Bees Pty. Ltd. is the first commercial enterprise created under the Auspice of SWARM.

This and every future agribusiness created by SWARM is to have as a central part of its charter a minimum of 10% of earnings donated to charity.   In the case of BBB, Canberra Missionheart’s MISSIONWORX Program has been chosen for support.   Missionheart is a community in service bringing healing and wholeness to the people of the city of Canberra.

Brindabella Birds ‘n’ Bees has 70 beehives and mobile honey processing capability operational since January 2007.   We have also established a poultry operation with over 900 purebred free range hens in operation since September 2007.

We prefer to do things the old fashioned way, hence our eggs are not the cheapest to produce but considered to be a superior choice for the following reasons:

  • Flock numbers are kept lower than that of the larger commercial operators and a generous space allocation is provided to reduce stress on the birds.
  • Roosters are run with the flock for greater social cohesion, balance and protection.
  • Natural behaviours of scratching, roosting, dust bathing, mating and brooding are all accommodated.
  • Traditionally all farmyard eggs were fertilised and we believe it to be a more natural and healthy choice for consumers.
  • We do not use hormones, antibiotics, steroids, or medications on our laying flock preferring to seek a homeopathic solution should ever we require one.
  • Our farm currently operates with the smallest carbon footprint of any commercial egg producer that we know of, as we endeavour to operate fully ‘off the grid’.
  • We are a local community farm and Canberra small business which provides meaningful physical and financial support back into the local community.
  • We provide Canberra on a weekly basis with farm fresh eggs and honey produced with a heart for the people of the city.

The list of retail outlets carrying our produce continues to grow as we grow.   Currently our product can be sourced from:

  • The Wine and Cheese Providore - Manuka
  • Dickson Health Foods
  • Kaleen IGA
  • Friendly Grocer - Cook
  • Friendly Grocer - Gundaroo
  • Friendly Grocer - Spence
  • Sutton Country Meats
  • Top Quality Meats - Evatt

You can also meet the team in person on Thursdays when we man a market stall at the Canberra City Boulevard Markets on city walk between 11am and 2pm each week.   We also run a stall each Sunday morning outside our home church at St James Anglican Church which is located in Holt, ACT.   All are welcome to drop in for a chat and cuppa.

We will provide below, regular updates on factors influencing on farm production of eggs and honey, so consumers can benefit from first hand information from the source and experience unprecedented insight into what has gone into producing the superior food they have chosen to consume.    We also encourage feedback from our loyal customer base to assist us in further refining our products and service delivery.

Hello,
Welcome to our BBnBB (that’s Brindabella Birds ‘n’ Bees Blog) for short. As Managing Director of the company I am very excited by the opportunity that this medium provides for me to communicate directly with you - our customers as we together grow this business in service to the Canberra community. We take pride in bringing you the freshest, cleanest local produce that we can provide.

Choosing to free range our hens was an ethical decision made by the Company from the very beginning as we wanted to produce eggs as close as possible to the way nature intended. This naturally comes at a cost, in terms of limiting the scale of our operations and raising many input costs including feed, labour and fixed costs.

Fuel prices and interest rates continue to bite hard, raising production costs significantly, but in recognition of the impact that these rises are having on the budgets of Canberra families, we have chosen to lower our retail prices across our egg range by 50 cents per carton. With the price of meat spiralling upwards, eggs can now provide a viable and tasty alternative source of protein at a more affordable price.

We have chosen not to spend thousands of dollars on fancy packaging or elaborate advertising campaigns, preferring to see that money go into caring for our birds, our people and the Canberra community. We limit on farm mechanisation, allowing for the ability to engage personnel with limited skills or disabilities in meaningful work and development opportunities.

The extreme weather we are experiencing throughout the region this week will impact on the size and quantity of eggs produced this week. As our focus is firmly on providing our local community with the freshest eggs in the marketplace, swings in production will flow through to our ability to supply on any given week. Rest assured any shortage on the shelves will be quickly rectified as production again improves in line with the weather.
